How do I check the transmission fluid on a 2004 Ford Explorer?

My Explorer is getting pretty old, so I want to be sure I keep up with maintenance so it lasts as long as possible. It’s been a while since I checked on my transmission. How can you tell if your transmission fluid needs to be filled?

Nice job keeping up with your car’s
maintenance needs
! That’s definitely the best way to extend the life of your vehicle.
Follow these basic steps to check the transmission fluid on a 2004 Ford Explorer:
  1. Park your vehicle on a flat surface and give the engine time to cool down. The engine should remain off as you check the transmission fluid.
  2. Open the hood by pulling the release lever under the dashboard panel to the left of the steering wheel.
  3. Locate the transmission dipstick and pull it out.
  4. Use a rag to wipe the fluid from the dipstick, and stick it back in its slot to collect fresh fluid from the reservoir.
  5. Confirm that the fluid level is between the minimum and maximum notches on the dipstick. If it falls below the minimum line, add up to a half-quart of fluid until it reaches the required fluid level.
