How do I check my home insurance claim history?

I’d like to review my financial records before I decide whether to stay with my current provider or switch. Do I just call up the insurance company and request documents? How do I check my home insurance claim history?

It’s a smart idea to review your insurance claim history periodically. This allows you to check that the record is accurate.
To check your home insurance claim history, start by asking your
insurance company
to provide a copy of their records.
You can also order a
CLUE report
, which stands for Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange. This document includes past claims, damages, and repairs under your policy.
Here’s what you might see in a CLUE report:
  • Dates of losses
  • Types of losses
  • Claim details (property damage, dog bite, natural disaster, etc.)
  • Payout amounts
To get your report, contact
LexisNexis
or call 888-497-0011. You’re entitled to one free copy of this report every year.
Be aware that CLUE reports are not comprehensive, since insurance companies are not required to provide data to CLUE. However, CLUE can reveal any serious concerns about the claims history of a house.
