How do I change my car insurance from Iowa to Nebraska?

I am moving from Iowa to Nebraska in a few days and am wondering how to change my insurance policy. I want to get as much paperwork done ahead of time as I can.

This will depend on which
car insurance
company you’re working with, but usually, if you know all of the information you need regarding the move, you can change your policy before you arrive in the new state. Here is the information you will need to know:
  • New address
  • Will your car be garaged?
  • How many miles is it to work one way?
  • How many miles will you drive your car annually?
  • Are there any new occupants in the household?
Once the update is completed, you will get a Nebraska ID card which you can use to register your vehicle in the state when you arrive. The coverages between IA and NE may be different, so make sure to review your new policy closely.
Every state has its own license plate requirement. Iowa requires you to surrender your plates to the DMV when you move. They have a very lenient time frame of six months to return the plates and receive a refund on your registration.
However, if your current insurance company doesn’t provide coverage in Nebraska, you’ll need to switch companies.
