How do I add my child to my car insurance?

My daughter just got her license and is going to be using my car pretty often. How do I add her to my insurance so she's covered in my car?

Congrats to your daughter for getting her license!
You can add her to your policy simply by calling your insurance agent. Some companies also allow you to add a driver online. Here’s some basic information you’ll need about the driver you want to add:
  • Name
  • Birthdate
  • Gender
  • Social Security number
  • Current employment info
  • Driver’s license number
  • Any accidents or tickets
Keep in mind that adding a driver to your policy may impact your insurance premium. Also, young drivers are more likely to cause a claim and are riskier for insurance companies, which can make your insurance
more expensive
.
It’s important to be prepared for the additional cost or use a service like
Jerry
to compare quotes from over 50 insurance companies and find a better rate.
Your insurance company might also offer discounts to offset the cost of adding your daughter to your policy. Check with your representative for specifics, but most companies offer:
  • Good student discounts (for students with a B average or above)
  • Away student discounts (for college students who won’t take their car with them but want to stay insured)
  • Defensive driving course discounts
We hope she enjoys being behind the wheel!
