My mechanic says my EGR valve needs to be cleaned, but he’s quoting me a high price because of all the labor. Before I invest in having him take it apart, is there another option I can try? How can you clean an EGR valve without removing it?

You can try spraying an EGR cleaner into the valve while the engine is on and revving at 2000 RPMs. Don’t spray too much at one time, however. Allow the engine to recover between sprays. And wear gloves as well—the spray is meant to remove carbon particles, so imagine what it will do to your skin!
Finally, do not be too upset if this approach doesn’t completely rectify the problem. Sometimes, all you can do is take an EGR valve out, dismantle it, and give it a thorough cleaning.
