How can I protect my leather seats from my dog?
My dog has long claws and is constantly digging into my leather seats when he’s in the car. I try to keep them trimmed, but they’re still causing damage! I want to preserve my seats, so what’s the best way to protect them from my dog?

Protecting leather seats from your dog can be tricky, but the best option is to purchase a cover that can act as a barrier between your seats and your dog.
While a towel, blanket, or bed sheet can do the trick short-term, they tend to slide around and can leave some areas unprotected.
Instead, consider using a backseat dog hammock—they’re designed to fit securely in your back seat for maximum coverage. Not only does it protect your leather seats, but they also prevent your dog from falling between the seats while the car is moving.
On top of a dog hammock, also consider the following:
- Tether
- A crate
- Doggy car seat
When unrestrained, it’s easy for dogs to run around in the backseat, which can distract the driver and
cause an accident
.While keeping your dog off your leather seats with a hammock is the best way to protect them, don’t forget to maintain the leather. Most cars come with protected leather or pigmented leather, which is durable and easy to clean, so you’ll want to clean and condition your leather car seats at least twice a year.
Here’s how to do that:
- Vacuum the seats to remove crumbs, dirt, dust, and dog hair
- Use a cotton or microfiber cloth to gently clean the leather with a small amount of water and mild liquid soap that’s been diluted (or use specialty leather cleaner)
- Condition the leather with a microfiber cloth and a leather conditioner
Conditioning the leather has several benefits, including moisturizing the leather to prevent cracking, buffing out light dog scratches, and strengthening the leather to enhance durability.
