How can I make car insurance cheaper for a 17-year-old?
How can I get cheap car insurance as a new driver? I’m 17 and I want to buy my first car. Money’s tight, so I was wondering how to get cheaper insurance. Any advice?

There are a few ways to get cheaper insurance, especially if you’re under 18 and a student.
- Take a professional driving course. Find a course that focuses on highway safety and defensive driving. Most insurance companies provide discounts when you complete these courses. Check with your specific insurance provider to find out which courses qualify.
- Apply for student discounts. Maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or above can make you eligible for student discounts. Your car insurance company will need proof that you meet student requirements every policy period (usually every six to 12 months) to continue to qualify.
- Get on your family’s policy. Insurance is expensive, and while your family’s insurance will go up if they add you, it will still be cheaper than getting a policy on your own. In fact, minors generally can’t get an insurance policy on their own. So if you can’t be added to a family policy, you may have to wait until you turn 18.
