How can I keep deer out of the garden?
My house backs onto a large forested area, and I keep seeing deer munching on my plants in the morning! How do I keep them out of my gardens?

Seeing animals munching on your plants can be super frustrating. The best way to keep deer out of your garden is to use deer netting or fencing. Black mesh deer netting is widely available and can be fastened to wooden 4x4s or metal T-bar garden posts. However, keep in mind that deer jump, so the fence must be 6 to 8 feet tall to keep them from jumping over it.
If you aren’t keen on building a fence, here are some other things to try:
- Fence individual plants: Fencing your entire garden can be tedious, but you can easily fence the plants deer are most attracted to. It’s a more cost-efficient and straightforward way to protect the plants that deers constantly go after, like Hinoki cypress or hydrangeas.
- Choose deer-resistant garden plants: Avoid planting specific plants that deer gravitate towards in your garden. If you’re not going to fence, opt for grasses or plants with foliage that is hairy, fuzzy, prickly, heavily-fragranced, leathery or fibrous, or toxic.
- Use deer repellant: Commercial deer repellants typically rely on bad odors and taste to repel deer. Look for them online or at a nearby garden supply store.
