How can I keep chickens out of the garden?
My husband and I live on 10 acres, and we’ve just finished planting our summer garden. We have 25 chickens that roam the area near the house, and we don’t want them digging through the garden—how do we keep them out?

Keeping animals out of the garden can be a challenge! With chickens, the best way to keep them out of the garden is to use fences, flowers, herbs, or citrus.
Here are five ways to keep chickens out of the garden:
- Use herbs: There are certain scents that chickens can’t stand—lavender, chives, catnip, spearmint, and marigold, for instance—so plant these where you don’t want your chickens to go! You can also use essential oils (especially peppermint or spearmint) on the soil to deter them.
- Use citrus: While you may love oranges, your chickens don’t. Use orange or grapefruit peels, citrus essential oil, or citrus juice to line your garden. If you’re prone to heavy rainfall, you may need to apply a more substantial amount.
- Fence your garden: The easiest way to keep chickens out of your garden is to use physical barriers. You can either fence individual plants or the whole garden.
- Use ground cover: Chickens love gardens for dirt, bugs, and plants—and if you remove what they love by covering exposed soil, they have no need to trek through your gardens.
- Make them their own garden: If there are certain plants they’re after, make them their own chicken garden! Include their favorite plants and an area for dust baths. That way, they don’t have to come after yours.
