How can I jump-start a diesel truck with a car?
I just drove out to give my buddy a jump, but when I popped the hood, I noticed his diesel truck has two batteries. How am I supposed to give him a jump-start when my car only has one?

Those two batteries can be a daunting sight when you’re trying to jump-start a diesel truck with a car, but don’t worry—it only looks complicated. The batteries in a diesel truck run parallel, which is a fancy way to say you only have to charge one battery to jump-start your buddy’s truck.
To jump-start the truck with your car, just pick one of the truck’s batteries and follow these steps:
- Connect one red clamp to the positive terminal of the truck, and the other red clamp to your car’s positive terminal.
- Connect one black clamp to your car’s negative terminal and then attach the other black clamp to a piece of unpainted metal on your buddy’s truck.
Let the battery charge for a few minutes before trying to fire up the truck. If it doesn’t work the first time, wait a few more minutes and try again. Once the truck starts, your friend should keep it running for at least 20 minutes to keep the batteries fully charged.
