How Can I Install a Lower Ball Joint Without a Press?
I’m installing new ball joints at home but I don’t have a press and I’m not sure how to install them without one. Can I install my lower ball joints without a press?

I’m sorry you’re having trouble installing your new ball joints! You’ll need a floor jack, a piece of wood, heavy-duty grease, a blow torch, and all of the parts included in your new ball joint package to install a lower ball joint without a press.
It’s important to note that pressed-in ball joints require a press for removal and installation. If you are installing this kind of ball joint, you need to purchase a press or bring your call to a professional for installation.
If your new ball joints aren’t pressed in, follow these steps to install your new lower ball joints:
- Remove the front wheel on the side you’re installing the lower ball joint. Inspect the control arm. A piece of wood between the hub and the jack will protect it. Put on your safety goggles!
- Grease the inside of the knuckle wheel to help the ball joint glide smoothly. Place your new ball joint in the freezer for 30 minutes to help it fit. Heat the outside of the knuckle wheel briefly with a blow torch to help it expand.
- Then slide the replacement ball joint in. Then insert the grease fitting and slide the rubber boot over the ball joint. Secure the ball joint using the included hardware and follow its directions while you do so.
Reinstall the control arm and reattach the wheel, and you’re good to go!
