It is great that you are looking to give them to someone instead of just getting rid of your old car seats by tossing them in the trash. Car seats can be expensive!
However, before you give them away, make sure they are still safe. The most important questions are:
Have they been involved in a car accident?
Do you still have all of the parts?
Did you make any modifications to them?
If the car seats are expired, you will need to get rid of them. Even though they look like they are in good shape, the foam insulation is too worn to absorb the shock impact from a car accident.
If they have been in a medium to a severe car accident, the same rule applies.
To get rid of car seats, cut the straps so that they are unusable. Then, put them out on the curb on trash day with a little sign saying do not use.
If the car seat is useable, there are several ways to give one away:
Check with a local big-box store for a buyback program.
Contact a local women’s shelter to see if they need any donations.
Get in touch with a local church or WIC center.
Leave it on your curb with a sign saying safe to use, please take.
