It can be difficult to get a limited license in Minnesota—so if you’re feeling confused by the process, you’re not alone. Here is how to get a driving work permit in Minnesota.
Drivers who are convicted of a DWI can have their license suspended for up to 90 days. You can apply for a limited license if you meet the following criteria:
  • Are currently employed or are a full-time homemaker
  • It is your first conviction in 10 years
  • You can not use a rideshare service or public transportation
  • Had a BAC below .16 when you took the alcohol concentration test
  • You require a vehicle to get to work, a chemical dependency treatment program, or a post-secondary institution because you are enrolled as a student
To apply for a driving work permit, you must:
  • Complete the DMV’s written test on drunk driving
  • Pay the reinstatement fee of $680
  • Take a driving test
  • Meet with an evaluator at the Department of Public Safety with your test score sheet after your license has been suspended for 22 days
Having your license suspended is a good time to learn and adopt safe driving habits. This can include taking a defensive driving course or seeking help for your addiction issues.
