How bad is the traffic in San Francisco?
Next month, I’m heading to San Francisco for a business trip, and my company has rented a car for me. The conference centre is a reasonable distance away from my hotel, so I’m going to drive. How bad is the traffic in the city?

is a gorgeous city, so hopefully you’ll get some time to explore! But if you’re getting behind the wheel of a car, San Francisco ranks #7 on the most congested cities in the United States and #34 in the world, which means it falls just behind other big cities like Los Angeles

. In 2021, the congestion level sat at 26%, up 5% from 2020 but down from 2019. A 26% congestion level means that the average travel time increased 26% from non-congested hours. So, a 30-minute trip in 26% traffic congestion would take you 8 minutes longer.
While the difference may seem small, drivers have seen a 3-minute increase in their daily driving times. But while San Francisco drivers may spend 88 hours in traffic each year, which equates to 3 days and 16 hours, there is a light at the end of the tunnel—that’s 2 days and 11 hours less than traffic times in 2019!

- Travel at off-peak hours: Traffic congestion peaks around rush-hour times, which means it’s best to avoid the roads between 7 am–10 am and 3 pm–7 pm
- Map out alternative routes in case the first choice is jam-packed
- Tweak your timing to beat rush hour going to and from your destination
- Check the traffic reports before you head out
