Sorry to break the bad news, but the BMW X5 does not have a spare tire.
However, there are two pieces of good news for you. The X5 comes equipped with run-flat tires, which will allow you to safely drive on a flat tire until you can get it serviced or replaced. Alternatively, you can purchase an optional spare tire from BMW for about $300.
If your wife isn’t familiar with run-flat tires, we’ll go over some of the pros and cons. Let’s start with the pros.
The benefits of run-flat tires are:
No roadside tire changes: These tires have reinforced sidewalls that can be safely driven while flat
Save space and fuel: Eliminates the storage needed and weight produced by a spare tire
Drive 50 miles: Travel up to 50 miles on a run-flat tire that’s been punctured, as long as you go at or below 50 mph
There are a few drawbacks, though, including:
Cost: Run-flat tires are a little more expensive to replace than regular tires
Stiff ride: Because of their reinforced material, the ride might feel a little harder than usual
Limited selection: To date, very few companies make a large line of run-flat tires
Whether you decide to go with the run-flats or purchase a spare, keep in mind new BMW purchases also come with a four-year roadside assistance plan. Additionally, you can purchase towing and labor coverage
when that plan expires. If anything does go wrong on the road with your new ride, you’ll want to be sure you’ve got the right BMW X5 car insurance
