Standard renters policies do not protect you against floods. Flood insurance is a separate policy that you would have to purchase through FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). There are many carriers that are qualified to sell these policies.
However, your renters policy may cover other types of water damage. If a pipe bursts in your home due to freezing, that is typically covered by your policy. Also, if you have coverage for water sewer backup on your policy, then you’re covered if sewage backs up into the home.
