Does renters insurance cover flood protection?

Does my renters insurance guard against flooding? My neighborhood has a history of flooding and I don't know if my insurance will cover me the next time it does!

“Standard renters policies do not protect against floods. Flood insurance is a separate policy that may be purchased publicly or privately.
The best options are either:
  • FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is available at a relatively low rate, and you may qualify for discounts if your community meets certain standards.
  • Private insurance is another viable option, though prices may vary drastically from one policy to the next. While private providers will usually have a higher claim limit, they may be less reliable than FEMA’s policy.
Although your renters policy won’t cover floods, it will likely cover other types of water damage. If a pipe bursts in your home due to freezing, that is typically covered by your policy. And
different plans
might cover further water damage, such as problems resulting from sewage backup or
storms
