Does renters insurance cover electrical damage?

There’s some kind of electrical issue in my apartment—I think the wires got damaged somehow. I’m nervous to tell my landlord because I don’t want to pay for the repairs. Will my renters insurance cover electrical damage?

While electrical damage in your apartment is concerning, don’t fret! Your renters insurance will cover electrical damage to your personal property. Plus, it is not your responsibility to care for your building or the electrical wiring.
Your landlord or property manager is responsible for maintaining the building. If there are issues with the electrical, you’ll want to tell them as soon as possible. Most landlords have a homeowners policy that will cover
certain perils
and liability.
Even if they don’t have insurance, it’s still their responsibility since they own the building. Although it’s nerve-wracking to tell your landlord about an issue, it’s important to do so. Electrical damage is a safety hazard and can cause more serious issues, like a fire.
If you’d like more clarification on what your renters insurance policy covers, be sure to look at your policy terms or reach out to your agent.
