Does music distract you while driving?

I recently purchased a new car with a fantastic sound system. I cannot wait to test out the new system, but I also want to ensure that I don’t get distracted. Will playing music while driving be distracting?

Congrats on your new purchase! I’m happy to hear that your new car comes with some great amenities. Listening to music while driving can be beneficial, helping to reduce the effects of anxiety and keep you stimulated. But loud music can distract you while driving and pose a serious safety risk.
Listening to music at a high volume:
  • Reduces your ability to drive defensively
  • Lowers your reaction time
  • Can lead to a car accident or failing to properly yield the right of way to other drivers and pedestrians
If you want to test your new speaker system out at its maximum capacity, try doing so before you hit the road. Once you’re out and about, keep the music at a medium-to-low level so you can be fully aware of any situation out on the road.
