Does homeowners insurance cover theft outside the home?

My week is off to a horrible start. My backpack was stolen out of a gym locker and my laptop was inside! I have homeowners insurance, however. Does my homeowners policy cover me for theft that happens outside the home?

We’re sorry you’re dealing with a stolen laptop. The good news is homeowners insurance covers you for theft outside the home, with some caveats.
You’re covered by
homeowners insurance
for theft of personal items that are kept in your home. That means a work laptop or the theft of a friend’s laptop would not be covered.
Items stolen outside the home may have lower coverage limits than those stolen in the home. This means you’re at risk of not being fully reimbursed for the stolen item. Most coverages cap off-premise coverage at 10% of your personal property limit.
If you’re unhappy with your homeowners insurance coverage, it may be time to make a switch. Use insurance broker
