Does home insurance cover my drainpipes?

There have been some leaks in my house. I’ve got a damaged drainpipe. Sounds like repairs might be a little pricey—does homeowners insurance cover my drainpipes?

Sorry to hear about your drainpipe issues. While your drainpipes are protected by homeowners insurance, that doesn’t guarantee your repairs will be covered.
Drainpipes are likely covered by the other structures portion of your
homeowners insurance policy
, which also includes things like fences, sheds, and pools. However, only damage that is sudden and unexpected will be covered. This is what the insurance companies call a named peril, which is damage that is specifically named on your policy.
If your drainpipe has been damaged by fire, lightning, wind, hail, vandalism, or another named peril, it will be covered. However, you’ll be financially responsible for damage caused by wear and tear, age, or poor upkeep.
Certain insurers sell sewer line insurance as a specialty addition to home insurance. This can pay for repairs not associated with a named peril. If you’re worried about drainpipe damage, add this coverage to your policy.
