Does home insurance cover leaking skylights?

We had a pretty big hail storm that damaged our roof. We just noticed one of our skylights is now leaking. Will our home insurance cover leaking skylights?

Oh no! Leaking skylights are definitely not good! If the hail storm was the cause of damage, your home insurance will cover leaking skylights.
Since hail is a
covered peril
, any damage it causes to your home would have coverage. That said, your home insurance doesn’t cover damage from things like:
  • Lack of maintenance
  • Age
  • Wear and tear
  • Faulty repair
If it turns out your skylights are leaking because of their old age or wear and tear, you couldn’t submit a claim to your home insurance company.
To move forward, have a repair person identify the cause of the damage and estimate the cost to repair your skylights. You can then submit this to your home insurance company. If they approve, you can submit a claim.
If you can submit a claim, you may notice your insurance rate increases at renewal. If that happens, consider using
