Getting flood insurance for a home near the water is a smart idea! FEMA flood insurance will cover a second home. In most instances, your second home will be defined as your non-primary residence, meaning you live there for less than 50% of the year.
Even if your second home is a non-primary residence, you can purchase flood insurance through FEMA and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). However, you may only be eligible for actual cash value on your home and property if your second home is a non-primary residence.
If your second home qualifies as a primary residence, you should be eligible for
replacement cost
with NFIP.
That said, FEMA isn’t your only option for flood insurance! Several private insurance companies offer flood insurance in addition to
home insurance
policies. If you currently have a home or car insurance policy, check with your insurer to see if they offer flood insurance.
