Does each roommate need renters insurance?
My roommate suggested we get renters insurance. I don’t know if I want to take on an extra expense every month, especially if one policy would cover us. Would each roommate need renters insurance?

If you’re on a budget, adding an extra expense every month can be a tough decision. While each roommate may not need their own
renters insurance
one policy won’t cover both of your belongings unless you’re both on the policy. If your roommate decides to get a renters insurance policy, only their personal property has coverage. If you wanted protection for your stuff, you’d either need to be on the policy as an additional insured or have your own policy.
Additionally, if renters insurance is a requirement per your lease, you’ll need to check with your landlord to determine if they require you to each have a policy.
Insurance companies have varying terms and conditions, so if you decide to get a policy with your roommate, you’ll need a company that insures you both. In some instances, your only option may be separate policies.
