Does driving on grass kill it?

My son stresses me out when he’s behind the wheel. It’s not necessarily that he’s a bad driver, he just seems to get distracted. Case and point is my lawn. In the past week alone, he’s driven over large portions of it after going off the driveway. To make matters worse, this is the first time that I’ve actually taken a vested effort in having a good lawn. So with all of that, does driving on grass actually kill the grass?

Teens
getting behind the wheel is always stressful for parents no matter how much guidance you give them. But when it comes to your beloved lawn, don’t stress too much. Driving on grass may kill it, but it may be fine depending exactly on what’s happening.
The only way that driving on grass would kill it is if:
  1. You compact the soil and the roots die. This typically only happens if you continuously drive in the same spots over and over again.
  2. You spin the tires and the motion actually uproots the grass. This usually only happens if the soil is wet from recent rain or moisture.
If you want to keep your son from driving on the grass, you have a few options:
  • Put rocks on each side of the driveway. Note that this might be asking for trouble if your son goes off the driveway onto the lawn inadvertently.
  • If your son continues to drive over the lawn, have him reseed it. Kids learn from deterrents. Not only will you get some free labor, but he’ll be more careful and learn something about lawncare at the same time.
  • Sit in the car and talk him through driving in and out of the driveway. A few words of guidance and encouragement are always beneficial for the novice driver.
Though driving on grass may not kill it, repetition can be deadly to a healthy lawn. But one thing is also certain: paying too much for car insurance can feel like you’re killing your finances. That’s when
