I’m moving to Seattle soon and I’m a little nervous about registering my car in a new state. Will I have to get a front license plate for my car in Washington?

Yes, you do need a front license plate in Washington, but try not to worry! You’ll have a grace period of 30 days after establishing residency when you’ve moved from out of state. Before these 30 days have passed, you must register your vehicle in Washington and get new license plates from your new home state, including a front license plate.
If you are caught driving without a front license plate after these 30 days have passed, though, you’ll face a $136 fine, so you’ll definitely want to remember to attach that new front plate! If necessary, you can also request an exemption by emailing
