Do I need to purchase personal injury protection through GEICO if I already have medical insurance in Michigan?

Why am I required to get PIP? I recently moved to Michigan and when I called to change my auto insurance policy, they said that I need to add PIP.

“Michigan is one of the 13 states that require personal injury protection (PIP) as part of your
car insurance
policy. The only exception is if you receive Medicaid.

Expenses include:
  • lost wages
  • funeral fees
  • hospitalization
  • surgery”
