Do I need an international driving permit for Cyprus?

My girlfriends and I are splurging on a trip to Cyprus, and we want to rent a car when we get there. Do I need an international driving permit to drive in Cyprus?

Wow—that will be a trip of a lifetime! As a major tourist destination, you do not need an international driving permit for Cyprus.
You can drive in Cyprus with a valid foreign license as long as your stay is less than six months. If you’re planning to stay longer than that, you’ll need to apply for a driving license with an EU member state.
If your driver’s license is in a language other than English or it doesn’t have your photo on it, you will need to apply for an international driving permit before your trip to Cyprus.
You may also want to carry:
  • Warning triangle to use in case of accidents
  • Proof of valid insurance
  • Valid registration
  • Valid Egyptian visa for the entirety of your stay
  • Passport
Driving without a valid license can land you a hefty fine—and so can driving without the proper insurance. Because international insurance regulations differ from domestic, you want to make sure you have the right coverage to keep you protected abroad.
