Good question! Yes, in 1947 the Tama car company made an electric car
that seated four passengers with a top speed of 22mph (35 km per hour). While it may seem like electric cars are new to the scene, they have been around for a long time. Right after the war in the ‘40s, 200 Japanese aircraft employees shifted gears to Tokyo Electro Automobile Co., Ltd. With a scarcity of gasoline, the car manufacturer looked for another way to create automobiles: the electric car.
Before the four-seater Tama car, the company built a two-seater truck prototype that had a 4.5 horsepower motor. The Tama cars each had a replaceable battery compartment which was easily accessible beneath the belly of the vehicle.
The Tama car company eventually merged with Prince Motors and eventually became part of Nissan in 1966.
