Can You Wear Airpods While Driving?

I got a sweet pair of airpods for my birthday but I’m not sure if I can wear them when I’m driving. Is it illegal to drive with airpods in, or is it okay to use them?

That’s an awesome gift—happy birthday! The good news is that in most states, you can wear an airpod in one ear while you’re driving.
There are a few reasons that you should keep one ear free when you’re on the road:
  • Noise-cancelling earbuds like airpods prevent you from hearing approaching emergency sirens, traffic accidents, and other dangerous situations on the road.
  • In some states, you’re only allowed to answer a phone call through your car’s dash or a single earbud if you’re driving.
  • Keeping one ear free means that if you’re pulled over, you cannot be charged with distracted driving.
If you are pulled over driving with both airpods in, even if they’re just resting in your ears, you can be ticketed for [distracted driving] (
