Can you upgrade a 2012 Nissan Leaf battery?

My husband and I bought our teen daughter a 2012 Nissan Leaf so she wouldn’t have to worry about gas. But now she's complaining that the battery doesn’t last for long. Can you upgrade a 2012 Nissan Leaf battery?

Yes, you can upgrade the battery on a 2012
Nissan Leaf
, but it’s not the most affordable upgrade.
The 2012 Nissan EV comes equipped with a 24-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that produces only 73 miles of range, but you can upgrade to a 30-kWh or a 40-kWh and see the following results:
  • 30-kWh battery upgrade: up to 107 miles of range
  • 40-kWh battery upgrade: up to 160 miles of range
Experts would not recommend the 62-kWh on a 2012 Leaf model due to the limits of the onboard charger.
Depending on your location and where you take your Leaf for a
battery upgrade
, you can expect to see the following price tags on a 2012 Nissan Leaf upgrade:
  • 30-kWh battery upgrade: $5,000 to $8,000
  • 40-kWh battery upgrade: $8,000 to $12,500
Pro tip: Nissan recently announced that all Leafs with a 24-kWh or 30-kWh battery would receive an upgrade due to the degrading performance of the original battery, so reach out to your local Nissan dealership to see if you qualify for this fantastic deal!
