Can you charge a lawn mower battery with your car?

My riding lawn mower sat unused all winter, and when I went to start it the battery was dead. Can I charge my lawn mower’s battery using my car?

While you can jumpstart your lawn mower’s battery with your car, you shouldn’t let your car charge your lawn mower.
Most vehicles and lawnmowers both use 12-volt batteries, but a car’s alternator provides way too much power for a lawnmower battery to handle. In short, if you connect your lawn mower to your vehicle and then start your vehicle’s engine – BOOM.
To get your lawn mower going again:
  • Make sure your vehicle is off
  • Use jumper cables to hook your lawn mower up to your vehicle like when you jumpstart a car
  • Leave the cables connected for a few minutes
  • Start your lawnmower
  • Let the lawnmower run to recharge the battery
