Can someone else insure my financed car?

I recently purchased a new car that I’ve wanted for so long. I’m so excited to drive around in my new vehicle. However, I wanted to know if my partner could put me on their car insurance even though the car is financed under my name. Can someone else insure my financed car?

It is possible—though not guaranteed—that someone else could insure your financed car.
The process is complicated, and it depends on your specific insurance company. Even if it is possible for your partner to insure the car, in nearly all cases, the registered owner must be listed on the policy.
Here’s what you need to do:
  • Ask your partner to contact their insurance company
  • Find out what is required to add you as owner/operator to their policy
  • Provide proof that you meet the company’s criteria
Most companies require that you reside in the same household and that you are a resident relative as defined by the company. However, some companies will list any household members regardless of relationship status.
