Can police unlock a car with electric locks?
I watch a lot of true crime shows–and there was an episode I watched recently where police were able to get inside a suspect’s vehicle with a smartphone app, even though it was locked with a key fob that they couldn’t find. Is this actually possible?

No—there’s no app that’s currently able to do that. But if the police have probable cause to get inside a vehicle to search it, rescue a passenger, or arrest a suspect, they’ll be getting inside somehow. If you’ve ever locked your keys in your car, you know just how difficult it is to get inside a vehicle that has electric locks. This doesn’t mean that it’s impossible, though.
While the police once would often unlock citizens’ vehicles when requested, this is a service that is quickly being undone. Nowadays, if you find yourself locked out of a vehicle, you’ll need to call a locksmith. Locksmiths carry the same tools that the police use, but a locksmith isn’t likely to shatter the window if needed.
If you get locked out and can’t find your key fob, they can even help program your spare or sell you another. Locksmiths can be a lifesaver during the moments of panic when you realize you can’t get into your vehicle, but keep in mind, their services can be pricey—sometimes $150/hr or more.
