Can I renew my driver's license online in New Jersey?

I just realized that my New Jersey driver’s license expires next week, but I won’t be in the state until after it’s expired. Is there a way I can renew it online?

You can renew your
driver’s license
online in
New Jersey
in most cases. After renewing, you can print a receipt to carry with you in case your license will expire before your new one arrives in the mail, which should be between two and four weeks.
Many times you will receive a license renewal form in the mail indicating if you’re eligible for online renewal. Even without a form, you can start the online proces,s and you’ll be notified if you have to renew in person. To start the online renewal process, you’ll need the following:
  • Your current driver’s license number
  • Your Social Security number
  • Access to a printer if you wish to print your interim license or receipt
  • An email address
  • A valid credit card for the $24 fee
You cannot renew your license online in the following situations:
  • Your license has been
    suspended
  • You have a commercial driver’s license (CDL)
  • Your license has a Temporary Visa Restriction
  • Your license has been expired more than six months
