Can I convert my 2WD Chevy Kodiak C4500 to a 4x4?
I recently bought a 2006 Chevy Kodiak C4500 from a friend of mine. Turns out it’s a two-wheel-drive C4500–I didn’t even know that they made those. Now I’m stuck with the thing. A friend of mine mentioned that you can convert a 2WD Kodiak to a 4x4. Is that even possible? If so, how would I do it?

I’m sorry to hear you’re stuck with a two-wheel-drive C4500! That must have been a serious disappointment. In answer to your question, yes—you can convert your 2WD
Chevy
Kodiak C4500 to a 4x4. But doing so is difficult and expensive. Most of the time, it’s actually cheaper to just buy an AWD C4500. If you’ve made up your mind to have your C4500 converted to AWD, you should know now that you’ll be fighting an uphill battle. The first difficulty is finding a mechanic to do it for you. The conversion is an unusual project. Most mechanics can’t or won’t do the job. Even if they agree, there’ll almost certainly be complications. Often, you’ll wind up with the suspension, frame, transmission, and electrical problems after the fact.
And that’s to say nothing of the cost. It’s difficult to estimate the total price tag. Since you’ll probably have trouble finding a qualified mechanic for the job. Once you find one, they can pretty much name their price–you won’t have too many other options. You’ll also need to replace a lot of parts, including the output shaft, transmission, wiring, shifter, and more. Even if you find one of the scarce conversion kits, it won’t do much to keep the price down.
Conversion jobs like this can easily cost $10,000-$20,000 when all is said and done.
So, while you can convert your Chevrolet Kodiak C4500 to a 4x4, you really probably shouldn’t.
