Since electric cars are built differently than gas-powered cars, are electric cars able to drift?

The short answer is: yes! Drifting is really just the driver intentionally oversteering. It’s basically a loss of traction while control is still maintained—and
electric cars
are absolutely capable of achieving this.
The question of whether or not a vehicle can drift is more determined by rear-wheel drive. It’s much easier to drift in a car with rear-wheel drive, as opposed to cars with front-wheel drive.
While you won’t hear an electric vehicle roar when it’s drifting like you would with a gas-powered car, some might say that certain electric vehicles are actually better equipped for drifting.
With a fast acceleration time and instant start, most electric cars are able to drift right away. Some
Teslas
even have a “Track Mode,” which allows drivers to customize preferences for track scenarios like drifting.
In 2020, a Porsche Taycan set the Guiness World Record for the longest drift in an electric car, according to
Car and Driver
. It happened in Germany, and the driver drifted a rear-wheel drive Taycan EV for 26.2 miles.
If you like drifting, make sure you have good car insurance to protect your car.
