Are electric cars really faster than gas-powered cars?

I’m definitely curious about electric cars, but I’m still skeptical about their ability to live up to the power and speed of a combustion-engine car. Are electric cars really faster than gas-powered cars?

If you’re looking fast, powerful ride, there are tons of
electric cars
out there that could meet your needs, but they don’t quite offer the same top speeds as gas-powered cars.
Driving an electric car at high speeds can have a huge drain on the battery due to energy utilized and
aerodynamic drag
sapping the battery power. The speed limitations on electric cars are often put in place by manufacturers themselves to prevent drivers from totally tapping out their battery charge.
What electric cars may lack in speed, they make up for in torque. Unlike a typical combustion engine, an electric motor has no gears to shift into, so the process of going from zero to sixty can happen almost instantaneously.
