The Ford F-150 Lightning Has Over 160,000 Reservations

Major manufacturers like
Ford
and GM have been making big commitments to electric vehicles. Both automakers are looking to go all-electric within the next couple of decades.
Ford’s latest contribution to their EV collection is the F-150 Lightning. Though it has yet to come out, its announcement was met with great fanfare and a long line of reservations. According to
CNET
, reservations for the Lightning have increased by thousands since September, and the number could be high enough to speak for multiple model years of the electric truck.
The Ford F-150 Lightning has enough reservations to cover multiple model years.

How many reservations have been placed for the Ford F-150 Lightning?

Since September, 10,000 new reservations have been placed on the 2022 F-150 Lightning, moving the total number from 150,000 to 160,000. Though an increase of 10,000 seems like a lot, it’s actually a decrease in pace for the Lightning, likely due to the already staggering number of reservations.
Ford plans on increasing its production levels to compensate for the demand by adding 450 new jobs in its plants. Their new goal is to roll out 80,000 trucks off the assembly line per year.
These figures are promising, and Ford hopes that the majority of these reservations will convert to sales in the end. Those currently in the queue for the Lightning have not committed to buying but have simply put down a refundable deposit of $100. Only time will tell how many placeholders will become purchases.

Specs on the F-150 Lightning

The Lightning is essentially an electric rebuild of Ford’s iconic F-150. A smart move, since the F-150 has been the best-selling truck in the U.S. for the last 44 years. Ford has decided to stick close to that model, as only one body style will be offered on the Lightning.
According to
CNET
, the 2022 Lightning will have four doors, a 5.5-foot bed, and the larger SuperCrew cab. It will also have three available trim levels: the base XLT trim, Lariat, and Platinum.
Higher trim levels will have a variety of special features, like a huge new 15.5-inch infotainment screen. BlueCruise, Ford’s hands-free driver-assist feature, will also be available, though it will only be standard on the Platinum and come as an add-on for the Lariat. Four-wheel drive will come standard on all trims.

Will all these reservations translate to sales?

It’s unlikely that every person who has reserved an F-150 Lightning will buy one, but Ford isn’t worried. Even just half of the reservations translating to concrete sales would take care of all the Lightnings Ford could produce in a year. If any more decide to buy, Ford could be looking at more than one sold-out model year.
The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning will start at $39,974, which isn’t bad for such a large EV. Deliveries will start going out sometime in spring of 2022.
