background
The 2022
GMC
Sierra 1500 is a comfortable pickup truck with a good amount of cargo storage and towing capability. One thing it isn’t? Reliable.
While
Consumer Reports
gave the truck a good road test rating of 78 out of 100, they found that the car really lacks reliability. Although the full reliability ratings aren’t complete yet, Consumer Reports predicts the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 will have a 1 out of 5 on the reliability scale. A rating that low, might make you want to rethink your
car-buying
decision before you head to the dealership to purchase this truck.

What is the GMC Sierra 1500?

Before we get into the reliability ratings, let’s go over some general information about this truck. The GMC Sierra 1500 is a full sized pickup truck, with an average price range between $31,200 and $60,400.
Consumer Reports found its acceleration to be solid, especially for a pickup truck. The Sierra 1500 uses a 5.3-liter V8 engine paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission to go from 0 to 60mph in just 6.9 seconds.
But, the car does have pretty poor fuel economy ratings. The overall mileage the truck gets is only 17 miles per gallon, which drops to 11 miles per gallon in the city, but increases to 24 miles per gallon on the highway. The average fuel cost per year for the truck is $1,715—which makes it not ideal for your wallet or the environment.
On a more positive note, Consumer Reports did give the truck high ratings in many comfort and convenience categories, like noise level, rear seat comfort, and truck and cargo space.

Now for the tough part—the reliability ratings of the GMC Sierra 1500. Like we mentioned earlier, the Consumer Reports reliability ratings for the 2022 model aren’t complete yet, but instead are based on predictions from previous models.
Consumer Reports describes their reliability ratings to be indicators of “how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead.” They base the numbers on subscriber surveys for over 300,000 vehicles, and have identified 17 potential trouble spots in reliability for vehicles ranging from engine to brakes.
Since 2015, the reliability rating of the GMC Sierra 1500 has only gotten worse. For the 2022 model Consumer Reports, using the data from the 2019, 2020, and 2021 models, predicts the truck will be much less reliable than the average car.
