In addition to Travis County itself, “taxing entities” that can establish budgets and tax rates include 21 cities, 17 emergency districts, 58 municipal utility districts, 15 school districts, and 17 water control improvement districts in the area.
First, the appraisal district works to determine your property’s market value, assessed value, and taxable value. 
Then, the tax assessor-collector calculates property tax bills, sends them out, and collects them when they’re due.

How to pay property taxes in Travis County 

Property tax payments in Travis County are due each year on January 31 to your local tax office.  Here’s how you can pay your taxes:
  • Online: You can make your property tax payment online via e-check, credit or debit card, and PayPal or PayPal Credit, although fees will apply for each method. You’ll need to know your account number or the six-digit billing number that can be found on your bill.
  • By phone: To pay by phone, call 1-888-286-9242. Accepted credit cards include Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover, and accepted debit cards include Visa and MasterCard. Fees will apply to card payments.
  • By mail: Mailed payments must be postmarked by January 31. Acceptable payments include money orders, cashier’s checks, and personal checks. Checks can be made out to Travis County Tax Office. A copy of your bill and the billing account number should be included as well. Send your payments to Travis County Tax Office, P.O. Box 149328, Austin, TX, 78714-9328.
  • In person: You’ll need to make an appointment to pay your property taxes in person (you can do so online here). In the drop-down menus, select “Property Tax Payments” for the location and “Property Tax - Others” for the service. The Travis County Tax Office is located at 5501 Airport Blvd. in Austin.
  • Through your mortgage: You can make your annual property tax payment over the course of the year as part of your monthly mortgage payment. The mortgage lender will store the money and pay it to the county on your behalf. Check with your lender to see if an escrow account is available to you.
