Few
luxury car
brands can compete with the king of luxury: Rolls Royce.  This British-based carmaker is so posh that most of its cars come with a $700 umbrella. Despite being the pinnacle of luxury, Rolls Royce has the same major challenge as every car company: converting to electric.
With tough EV regulations coming to the EU, UK, and the Unied States in the next decade, Rolls Royce is pivoting towards an EV lineup. The first step in that transition is finishing the Rolls Royce Spectre, the company's first fully electric vehicle.

Meet the Rolls Royce Spectre

If everything goes to plan, the Rolls Royce Spectre will be the company's first fully electric car. Currently, the Spectre is still in testing and development, meaning exact specifications are unknown.
Nonetheless, a few details are available which provide some insight as to what the Rolls Royce Spectre will look like.
According to
Motor Authority
, the Rolls Royce Spectre will carry a whopping 1,500-pound battery.  For comparison's sake, the battery in the Tesla Model S only weighs 1,200 pounds. No data has been released in terms of range, but we can expect the Spectre to have one of the best ranges in the market.
The Rolls Royce Spectre will also have excellent aerodynamics, further boosting its range. The current prototype has a drag coefficient of 0.26 Cd. The lowest Cd of cars currently in production is the Mercedes-Benz EQS which measures at 0.20.
Rolls Royce was able to achieve this excellent drag coefficient by redesigning the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament.

Why is the Rolls Royce Spectre being tested in Sweden?

The Rolls Royce Spectre has plenty of testing ahead of it before it will be available for purchase. Currently, prototypes are undergoing winter testing near Arjeplog, Sweden. Temperatures in this northern town can drop as low as -15 degrees F, making it a perfect place for winter testing.
Arjeplog is a popular testing site for European carmakers. Its low population and long winters make it an ideal location to test prototype vehicles in frigid conditions.
In the case of battery-powered vehicles, it is important to see how the battery will operate when temperatures never get above freezing. As for the Rolls Royce Spectre, the engineering team is planning to test nearly 400,000 drive miles in this cold climate.

Availability of this ultra-luxury EV

Rolls Royce aims to have the Spectre available by late 2023. This of course depends on successful testing results. The Rolls Royce Spectre is expected to be one of the most high-tech vehicles ever made by the company, which means excessive testing.
The Spectre will have over 141,000 sender-receiver relations in its electronics, more than twice the amount found in the Rolls Royce Phantom.
In the long run, the Rolls Royce Spectre will be a jumping-off point for the company to go fully electric. Rolls Royce plans to have fully electric versions of the Phantom, Ghost, and Cullinan by 2030.
