Kicking things off is the interestingly-named “Tacozilla” Tacoma Camper, Toyota’s answer to the downsizing/tiny house craze and a love letter to the iconic campers of the 70s and 80s. Essentially, the Tacozilla is a Tacoma TRD sport that has been converted into a fully-functional camper.
Built with nature lovers in mind, the Tacozilla has a custom-fabricated frame and an aluminum exterior with smooth, rounded surfaces. The fully-insulated interior is truly something else, featuring teak sauna-style flooring, a full bathroom with a hot water shower, and a kitchen with a stove and a sink.
The Tacozilla was designed and built 100% custom by Marty Schwerter and his team at Toyota Motorsports Garage. It made its debut at Toyota’s 2021 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Toyota bZ4X BEV Concept
Toyota’s answer to Tesla, Volkswagen, and others on the electric vehicle marketplace, the bZ4X is a sleek battery electric vehicle (BEV) with impressive specs. Representing another step toward Toyota’s commitment to carbon neutrality, the bZ4X is meant to be the first in a line of BEVs to be introduced under the “Toyota bZ” brand umbrella.
The bZ4X is expected to achieve around 250 miles per charge on a battery that is meant to be 90% effective after 10 years of ownership. It also boasts the modern tech features expected for an electric vehicle, including over-the-air (wireless) software updates, a touch-screen instrument panel, and compatibility with high-output chargers (capable of reaching 80% within an hour).
The 2023 bZ4X is scheduled to start arriving at dealerships in the spring of 2022, with an estimated MSRP of $43,200 for the XLE model and $47,900 for the Limited FWD model. All-wheel drive versions will cost $2,080 more.
GR Supra Racing Concept
A legend in its own right, the Toyota Supra was one of the most iconic cars in the racing world during its original production run. Now, Toyota seeks to revive that mythical name with its new GR Supra Racing Concept.
The name “Supra” inspires incredible power, breathtaking performance, and amazing handling, and the new GR Supra delivers on all fronts. The interior is fully designed for racing, featuring fire extinguishers, a roll cage, and a safety harness, as well as a quick-release steering wheel equipped with a paddle-shifting system.
Under the hood, the GR Supra boasts a twin-turbo 3.0L V6 that produces 383 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque. Performance-wise, the GR Supra can reach a top speed of 155 mph and can go from 0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds.
Toyota TJ Cruiser
First revealed as a concept vehicle at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, the TJ Cruiser has since been revealed as the successor to the vaunted FJ Cruiser
. Claimed to be “part minivan and part SUV,” the TJ cruiser seats five passengers, although Toyota is expected to introduce a model with a third row at some point. Interestingly, the front two doors open traditionally, but the rear doors slide open like those on a minivan. Rumored options for the TC Cruiser include both a 1.8 liter hybrid powertrain and a 2.0L four-cylinder engine. The first TJ Cruisers were sold in Japan in December 2020. While there are no current plans to bring the TJ Cruiser to the North American Market, the possibility certainly cannot be ruled out.
Toyota Setsuna
Last but certainly not least, we’ve arrived at what just might be the most interesting vehicle on our list, the Setsuna
. Less a performance machine than an art piece, the Setsuna is a beautifully made wooden concept car created for the 2016 Milan Design Week festival. Based on the Toyota Camatte, the Setsuna is 97% cedar wood with a top speed of 28 mph and a traveling range of 16 miles. Toyota engineer Kenji Tsuji and his team created “Setsuna” (Japanese for “moment”) to challenge the idea that cars are only meant to be seen as industrial products loaded down with the latest technology. Instead, Tsuji wanted to embody the affection that owners come to feel for their cars and to show that they basically grow to become part of the family over time.
