2022 Ram 1500 ground clearance

The Ram 1500 comes in eight trims—Tradesman, Tradesman HFE, Big Horn,
Laramie
, Rebel,
Longhorn
, Limited, and TRX—but your exact ground clearance depends on the wheels you choose for your truck.
The standard 18-inch wheels offer a generous 8.6 inches of ground clearance while sizing up to 20- or 22-inch wheels adds a little more space between your vehicle’s underbelly and the ground. Massive 35-inch tires are available for the TRX trim and bring the truck’s ground clearance up to a whopping 11.8 inches.

Ram 1500 ground clearance over the years

If you’re looking at a used Ram 1500, your ground clearance will probably be a little lower since this best-selling pickup has been getting more and more off-road capable with each model year.
Here’s what the Ram 1500 ground clearance has looked like since its introduction in the 1980s:
  • 1981–1993: 8.3 inches
  • 1994–2001: 8.2 to 9.8 inches
  • 2002–2008: 7.1 to 9.6 inches
  • 2009–2018: 7.1 to 9.6 inches
  • 2019–2023: 8.6 to 11.8 inches
Remember, your exact ground clearance may depend on your vehicle’s model year, its trim level, the size of its wheels, and whether or not it’s been equipped with aftermarket mods like a lift kit or oversize tires.

What is ground clearance—and why does it matter?

The distance between the lowest point of a car’s chassis and the ground is referred to as its ground clearance. Ground clearance is most valuable to drivers who want to go off-roading with their vehicle, but there are a lot of other benefits to owning a vehicle that sits higher off the ground. Not only is it easier to maneuver over gravel and rough terrain without damaging its undercarriage, but it can also roll through deep snow with ease.
A car with six to eight inches of space between its underside and the ground will sustain less wear and tear from normal road conditions, but experts recommend at least 8.5 inches of ground clearance when it comes to off-road adventuring.

Is the Ram 1500 a good off-road vehicle?

Even with the smallest wheel option, the Ram 1500 offers 8.6 inches of ground clearance, making it capable both on and off the road. But for the best off-the-beaten-path performance, a few trims stand out.
The Rebel is equipped with steel plates on its undercarriage, Bilstein shocks, tow hooks, and a locking rear differential, while the upscale TRX combines off-road capability with luxury features and a supercharged Hellcat engine. But a BackCountry Edition of the Big Horn is the most wilderness-ready Ram 1500 with safety features and equipment such as:
  • All-terrain tires
  • An off-road suspension system
  • Skid plates
  • Hill-descent control
  • Off-road tuned shocks
  • An electronic rear differential

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
