The base trim for the 2022 Porsche Taycan
has a ground clearance of 5.6 inches. Ground clearance on the standard sedan trims goes down to just 5 inches, while the specs on the Cross Turismo trims see that number rise to 5.8 inches. You’re more likely to talk about ground clearance when looking at the offroading capabilities of an SUV—not a luxury electric sedan. However, the hatchback-designed Taycan Cross Turismo may see this Porsche riding the backroads easier than you’d expect.
Porsche doesn’t even include ground clearance in their U.S. Taycan specs, but leave it up to us find the facts! Here’s everything you need to know about the Taycan’s ground clearance and off-roading capabilities!

The 2022 Taycan is available as a sedan
or a hatchback
and the ground clearance varies across its different models and trims. Here’s how: GTS Sport Turismo: 5 inches
4 Cross Turismo Hatchback: 5.8 inches
4S Cross Turismo Hatchback: 5.8 inches
Turbo Cross Turismo Hatchback: 5.8 inches
These measurements do not take any extra cargo or passengers into account. Once you get into the Porsche Taycan you can expect an incredibly low ride—great for speed and handling, but not so much for off-roading.
Porsche Taycan ground clearance over the years
The Porsche Taycan’s ground clearance has been relatively consistent throughout its past model years, considering it's still in its first generation of production. Still, the 2020 and 2021 models saw some minor variations when it comes to the Taycan’s height.
The original 2020 Taycan was only available as a sedan—still with only 5 inches of ground clearance. The Cross Turismo hatchback options were introduced for the 2021 Taycan and added ground clearance options of up to 5.6 inches.
What is ground clearance—and why does it matter?
A car’s ground clearance refers to the distance between the ground and the lowest point on its undercarriage—also referred to as the vehicle chassis. A lot of essential equipment is kept in this area, so ground clearance is an essential number to understand how much buffer room exists between this essential equipment and potential dangers on the road.
A vehicle with a high ground clearance—like an SUV—has more height to safely handle rougher varieties of terrain. On the other hand, a vehicle with a low ground clearance—like the Porsche Taycan—has a lower center of gravity for better handling and aerodynamics. Typically, SUVs will try to raise their ground clearance, while cars designed for speed try to ride as low to the ground as possible.
Is the Porsche Taycan a good off-road vehicle?
Most vehicles need to have a ground clearance of 8.5 inches or more to be considered good for off-roading. By this factor alone, our speedy low-riding green vehicle
should not be considered a good off-road vehicle. However, factors like engine, drivetrain, and driver assistance features can also play a role in determining a good off-road vehicle. All trims of the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo are available with an optional Off-Road Design Package. Adding this package to the hatchback adds a mere 0.4 inches of ground clearance—6.2 inches total—and includes several exterior redesign elements to optimize the vehicle for a bit more bump beneath the wheels.
The Cross Turismo also features a standard Gravel mode. When activated, this mode sends the car’s suspension to the tallest setting and redirects stability control and torque management to optimize grip on the road. While neither of these features will prepare your Taycan to go rock-climbing, it will be better off for a slightly rougher-than-paved-road ride.
