Is a Volkswagen Jetta a good first car?

I moved out of the city to the suburbs about a year ago, and I’m finally ready to buy my first car. Since I didn’t need a car in the city and drove sparingly, I’m not exactly sure what to look for. My neighbor has a Jetta that he wants to sell, but I’m not sure if that’s a good option. Is the VW Jetta a solid car for a first-time driver?

On the whole, the Volkswagen Jetta is a good first car, although it has some minor drawbacks that you should also consider before you take the plunge.
Let’s start with the positives:
  • Around 33 mpg combined on most models made within the last 10 years
  • Affordable car insurance
    compared to similarly priced sedans
  • Large field of vision allows you to see other motorists with ease
  • Five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
The only downside is that the Jetta doesn’t have great reliability ratings compared to domestic or Japanese models. If you decide to buy a Jetta, just make sure to get one with low miles to avoid higher repair costs.
