Maryland
from out of state must visit their local Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) office to apply for a
Maryland driver's license
with their new address. Current Maryland residents have the option of completing their change of address online.
Moving is exhausting, and it’s tempting to just call it done once all your boxes are loaded into your new place. But failing to update your address with the MVA, the post office, and your
car insurance
provider can have lasting consequences.

How to change your address on a Maryland driver’s license

Most of us would rather enjoy a bit of brain freeze than spend any time in our local MVA or DMV. Luckily, most states offer convenient virtual options for many of the otherwise annoying tasks we’re faced with completing as part of the privilege of being able to drive.

If you’re moving within Maryland

Even if you’re just moving across town, you need to update your address with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) within 30 days of your move. In-state address changes can be reported:
To update your address, you will need to provide proof of Maryland residency and proof of your new address. There is no fee to update your address unless you wish to receive a replacement license, in which case you will pay a $20 fee.

If you’re moving to Maryland from another state

If you’re moving to Maryland from out of state, you’ll have a few more steps to complete. You’ll need to head in-person to your nearest MVA branch office to apply for a Maryland driver’s license within 30 days of establishing residency in the state.
Before you head to the MVA, you’ll need to gather a few things:
  • Proof of age
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of residency
  • Your current out-of-state license—you will be asked to surrender this at the end of your application process
Once you have your documents assembled, head to your MVA office to apply for your license. In addition to completing a
vision screening
, you’ll also be required to pay a $9 fee for a new driver’s license.
You will also need to update your motor vehicle registration within 60 days of moving to Maryland.

Other steps for a Maryland change of address

Notifying the United States Postal Service (USPS) of your changed address is another key step in any moving process. Filling out
USPS' quick online form
ensures you won’t miss any mail or packages. While you’re there, you can also update your voter registration.

How to notify your insurance company of your Maryland change of address

One of the most important, and frequently-overlooked, steps in your moving process is informing your car insurance provider of your updated address. You should do this as soon as possible after moving or even notify your insurance provider prior to making the move.
You can notify your insurance company by calling or emailing your agent. Depending on your insurance provider, you may also be able to update your address online or on a mobile app

Why notifying your insurance company of a change of address is so important

Notifying your insurance provider of your new address is important for two main reasons.
  • First, insurance providers often use your zip code to help determine your insurance premium. Not keeping it up to date could lead to lost savings on your part. It could also look like fraud from the insurer’s perspective.
  • Second, if you have not updated your insurance to be in line with
    Maryland’s car insurance laws
, you could be fined or face a license suspension.
