background
From in-state moves to establishing residency in the Sunshine State, you can get your driver’s license updated with your new address at a Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) office in Florida. If your move is local, you can update your address online.
Like any monumental life event, moving can put a strain on your brain and your to-do list. While you put the bulk of your time into logistics like booking a moving company, other not-so-minor details like updating your mailing address can fall to the wayside.
To be able to legally drive with your Florida license and avoid a lapse in your
car insurance
coverage, you’ll need to make a trip to the DMV once your boxes have made it to your new address.

While that may feel like a tedious step, it doesn’t have to be with the help of this guide. We’ve got you covered with all the steps needed to get your mailing address up to speed in Florida.

How to change your address on a Florida driver’s license

With technology on your side, changing your address in Florida could be as easy as placing an order on DoorDash (okay, maybe not that easy). If you’re moving within the state, you’ll be able to get your address changed without having to leave the house

If you’re moving within Florida

Are you hightailing it south from
Sarasota
to
Naples
or wanting to move within reach of Mickey in
Orlando
? No matter where you’re going within Florida, you’ll need to get your address up to date with the Florida FLHSMVwithin 30 days of your move
You can do this in one of two ways:
Either way, you’ll need to provide documentation proving your identification, Social Security, and residential address. You can follow these links to find a full list of approved documents whether you’re a
US citizen
,
immigrant
,
non-immigrant
, or
Canadian
Although your electronic title will be updated automatically with your new address once it’s processed, you’ll need to fill out an
Application for Certificate of Title With/Without Registration (HSMV form 82040)
to obtain a printed title with your updated address.
You’ll also need to apply for a new registration with your current address with a completed
Application For Duplicate or Lost in Transit/Reassignment for a Motor Vehicle, Mobile Home, or Vessel Title Certificate (HSMV form 82101)
Once all of your documents are filed either online or in person, you’ll be ready to move forward after your move!

If you’re moving to Florida from another state

Moving to Florida has its perks, but getting your address updated once you do can be a bit of a process. Since you can only get your address updated in person, you’ll need to set some time aside for the FLHSMV within 30 days of your move.
First, you’ll need to make your way to an FLHSMV location to apply for a driver’s license. While you’ll be required to complete a vision test, you could qualify to obtain a license without taking a written or road test. You’ll also be required to provide the same above-mentioned documentation certifying your identity, Social Security, and proof of address
To avoid a trip back home to grab additional documents, bring either your birth certificate or passport, a Social Security card or W-2 form, and a utility bill or pay stub. Check out the full list of approved documents for
US citizens
,
immigrants
,
non-immigrants
, or
Canadians
.
To receive your updated
Florida driver’s license
, you’ll need to pay a fee. Here’s how the fees line up in Florida:
  • Florida Class E license (including learner’s permit): $48.00
  • Commercial driver license (Class A) license: $75.00
A processing fee of $6.25 will also be issued for anyone applying for a driver’s license. Get the full list of driver’s license fees
here
.
Finally, you’ll need to update your title and registration. If your vehicle has an out-of-state lienholder, they must be contacted so the title can be transferred to Florida. Whether you can get it transferred or can have a certified letter stating their refusal to transfer it, you can visit a local FHSMV and submit the
Application for Certificate of Title With/Without Registration (HSMV form 82040)
.
If your vehicle doesn’t have a lien, you’ll need to submit the same application with your proof of identity, Florida insurance, and original
certificate of title

How to notify your insurance company of your Florida change of address

Within 10 days of establishing your Florida residency, you’ll need to lock down Florida insurance before you can register your vehicle. Not only is this a requirement, but it will also prevent a lapse in coverage with your current provider.
Most insurance companies offer online access to forms to complete address changes, but it’s always a good idea to call directly and ensure you’ve covered all your bases.

Why notifying your insurance company of a change of address is so important

Getting pulled over amid a move is not only stressful but can also lead to serious fines and penalties if your insurance isn’t updated with your new address. With
minimum insurance requirements in Florida
, you could be running into repercussions as severe as a registration suspension
Legal troubles might not end with getting pulled over, either. Since insurance companies set rates based on your location, a claim filed with your new, mismatched zip code could get you flagged for fraud charges
To avoid starting on the wrong foot with your new address, let your insurance company in on your updated situation as soon as possible.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
