Are license plate frames legal in Colorado?

. But there are restrictions as to what you can use, including the color of the frame and the angular distortion. You must also ensure the frame doesn’t cover any letters, numbers, or registration stickers so that automatic systems can read your license plate. What are the rules for license plate frames in Colorado?
The Colorado Revised Statutes Section 42-3-202 states that vehicles must not be operated “with an affixed device or a substance that causes all or a portion of a license plate to be unreadable by a system used to automatically identify a motor vehicle.”
This means that the frame or cover should not obstruct the plate. Registration stickers should also be visible at all times. Any license plate frame that doesn’t block or distort any part of the plate’s text and registration stickers is legal.
What about license plate covers?
License plate covers are also legal in Colorado. As long as the cover doesn’t distort the angular visibility, alter the plate color, or appear smoked or scratched/dirty.
What are the fines for license plate frames in Colorado?
If your license plate frame obscures the text and stickers on your plate, you will be fined $100 according to Colorado law.
