How to change your address on a North Dakota driver’s license

Updating your address on your existing North Dakota driver’s license is pretty easy. You can do it online, but you won’t get a new driver’s license with your new address unless you go into a
North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDOT)
office. The online process simply changes your address on record.
New state residents have a bit of a hairy process to go through, and it can’t be done online. Either way, let’s dive into the steps below.

If you’re moving within North Dakota

If you’re moving within North Dakota—whether it’s across the state or just a few blocks away—you have an extremely small window of time to update your address with the NDOT. The state gives you 10 days to make the change. Luckily, it can be done online or on paper.
You can choose one of the following options:
  • Complete the
    online change of address form
, which includes a link to update your vehicle registration
  • Call (701) 328-4353 to update your address over the phone
  • Visit a license office to make the update in person, but keep in mind you must
    make an appointment
    first
When you change your address online or over the phone, a new driver’s license will not be issued. While North Dakota requires you to update your address within 10 days of moving, the state does not require getting a new license with your new address on it.
To obtain a new license that reflects your correct address, you’ll have to make an appointment to visit a
license office
in person. Walk-ins are not allowed. The cost for a North Dakota duplicate license with your new address is $3.

If you’re moving to North Dakota from another state

New North Dakota residents will have to
set an appointment
with a state
license office
to get a new driver’s license. The process is somewhat involved, and it needs to be completed within 60 days of moving to the state.
The first thing you should do is gather the appropriate identifying documents needed for a North Dakota driver’s license. You’ll need documents that show:
  • Your legal citizenship, presence, or permanent resident status such as a birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or valid residence card
  • Proof of your legal name if it is different from the above identifying documents like a marriage certificate or divorce decree
  • Documentation of your Social Security number which can be found on your social security card or W-2 forms
  • Proof of your North Dakota residence, which may include a property tax statement, a mortgage or rental agreement, or a utility bill
There are lots of documents you can bring to verify this information, but all four of the above criteria must be met to apply for a new license. You can find a complete list of North Dakota driver’s license verifying documents
here
.
Once your documents are gathered, you may want to brush up on the
state’s driver’s manual
, because you will be required to take a driving test. When you’re ready, you can schedule an appointment for the test with a license office and get the process rolling. You’ll have to pay a $25 total fee—$15 for the new license, $5 for the road test, and $5 for the driver’s knowledge test.

Other steps for a North Dakota change of address

Besides updating your license, you’ll want to update your North Dakota vehicle registration within 90 days of moving if you’re new to the state. This can’t be done online, so you’ll need to
schedule an appointment
with NDOT and bring several documents with you, including:
In addition to updating your license and registration, you’ll want to fill out
change of address paperwork
with the US Postal Service so they can redirect your mail to your new home.

How to notify your insurance company of your North Dakota change of address

With so much on your plate during a move, it could be easy to overlook contacting your car insurance company. However, you need to notify them of your new address. Failing to update your car insurance information could result in a lapse of coverage.
Many insurance companies offer online portals for you to easily update your information from home, but you also can call their customer service to make these changes.

Why notifying your insurance company of a change of address is so important

Like most other states, North Dakota requires drivers to buy a minimum
liability insurance
policy.
If you’re caught driving with no car insurance
, you could face up to $5,000 in fines and up to 30 days in jail, plus other restrictive consequences.
That’s why it’s so important to update your car insurance company when your address changes. Most insurance companies use your address to set your insurance policy rate. That means if you don’t inform them when you move, your policy could be null and you might end up driving without the coverage you thought you had!
An easy phone call can save you a lot of hassle down the road and will keep your insurance policy intact.
