background
A Porsche certified pre-owned warranty provides up to seven years and unlimited miles of coverage for your roadster’s most critical parts.
If you’re looking to add some sizzle to your drive, a used Porsche could be right up your alley. But buying a used Porsche on the private market could be a disaster waiting to happen—especially if the seller shrugs when you ask about the vehicle’s history. To avoid such a sorry predicament, you might want to look into the peace of mind that comes with a Porsche certified pre-owned vehicle.

Porsche certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty coverage

Porsche’s certified pre-owned (CPO) Limited Warranty Coverage plan offers protection for your used Porsche. It adds onto a Porsche’s original factory warranty, which runs 4 years and/or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. With a Porsche Limited Warranty Coverage plan, you could get up to seven years of coverage with unlimited miles.
Let’s unpack that—when buying a CPO Porsche, you’ll be entitled to any remaining portion of the vehicle’s original factory warranty. As mentioned, a Porsche’s original factory warranty is for 4 years and/or 50,000 miles. Now, a CPO Porsche can be as old as 13 years, and have up to 124,000 miles on its odometer. So, there is a chance you’ll get your hands on a used Porsche that still has some time left on its warranty.
If you get a CPO Porsche with time left on that warranty, it gets added onto the Limited Warranty Coverage you get as a CPO vehicle. So along with any factory warranty left, you’ll get the 2 years and unlimited miles that comes with your new-ish Porsche being a CPO vehicle. You also have the option of adding an extra year to your CPO coverage, meaning you could have up to 7 years of coverage. Once the original factory warranty expires, your CPO coverage will kick in.
However, there’s also a chance you’ll get your hands on a CPO Porsche that’s past its original warranty. If that’s the case, you automatically get the 2 years and unlimited miles that comes with the CPO Limited Warranty—it starts at the date of purchase. You can also add an additional year for up to three years of coverage.
With a Porsche CPO warranty, trained Porsche mechanics will repair any defects or broken parts with authentic Porsche components, with zero deductible—just like the original factory warranty.
Granted, a Porsche CPO warranty is not an extended warranty—your CPO coverage won’t be as comprehensive as the original warranty.

What’s covered

A Porsche CPO warranty covers faulty components due to poor workmanship or part defects, but it doesn’t cover everything. Here’s what is covered with a Porsche CPO warranty:
  • Engine
  • Fuel/cooling system
  • Powertrain
  • Transmission
  • Suspension
  • Steering
  • Brakes
  • Heating and air conditioning
  • Electrical
  • Body
  • Comfort electronics

What isn’t covered

Unfortunately, not everything is covered under a Porsche CPO warranty. Here’s just some of the components not covered:
  • Emission control system
  • Corrosion
  • Adding or replacing fluids if not part of a covered repair
  • Air conditioning refrigerant charge if not covered by warranty repair
  • Cleaning and polishing
  • Any modifications
  • Meters and gauges
  • Part failure from lack of maintenance
  • Battery damage due to lack of use, storage
  • Cosmetic damage due to normal wear and tear
  • Any racing-related damage
  • Glass breakage due to anything but poor workmanship/factory defect
  • Tires
  • Damage stemming from abuse or acts of God

Additional benefits

Along with inexpensive repairs that come with a Porsche CPO Limited Warranty, you’ll also get some nice perks, including the following:
  • Porsche Roadside Assistance: 24/7 coverage that includes towing, battery jumpstarts, flat-tire service, emergency fuel deliveries, lockout service, lost or stolen key, extrication/winch service
  • Electric coverage: As part of Roadside Assistance, electric Porsche owners get Out-of-Charge Service (up to 5 times per year)
  • Trip Interruption Service: If you’re more than 100 miles from home and your Porsche breaks down, you’ll be entitled to up to $250/day for up to three days, which will help reimburse you for lodging, food, alternate transport, and car rental

Is a Porsche CPO warranty transferable?

Yes, a Porsche CPO Limited Warranty is fully transferable, meaning you can hand it over to the vehicle’s next owner when you’re ready to move on from your certified pre-owned Porsche. Transferring the warranty is free of charge.

Porsche CPO program certification process

Not any old Porsche can be slapped with the certified pre-owned label—the German carmaker puts all eligible used Porsches through their paces in the form of a rigorous 111-point plan, covering everything from mechanical components to a Porsche’s cosmetic appearance.
Any faulty parts, aftermarket components, or improper modifications will be repaired and replaced with genuine Porsche parts. Porsche will scour a vehicle’s vehicle history report, go over its maintenance history, and take the car for a spin before it's given a passing grade.
The Porsche certification process ensures that your certified pre-owned Porsche is ready for the road—if any problems do come up, you’ll have up to three years of coverage with the CPO Limited Warranty.

Are Porsches reliable?

Having a solid warranty—such as the Porsche CPO Limited Warranty—is a guard against any unforeseen problems that could crop up within the first 2-3 years of owning a CPO Porsche. Ideally, you want a Porsche that’s reliable. While some models are exactly that, other Porsche just…aren’t.
Porsche gets mixed reviews when it comes to reliability. For instance, RepairPal gives Porsche an overall reliability grade of just 2/5, which is not good. On the other hand, JD Power ranked the Porsche brand as the 7th most reliable make on the road.
Why the discrepancy? Well, not all Porsches are as highly rated for dependability as others. As a case in point, we’ll take a look at the reliability of two popular Porsches—the 911 roadster and the Macan SUV.

Porsche 911 reliability scores

Porsche’s vaunted 911 roadster scores excellent reliability ratings, especially from JD Power:
  • Ranked #1 for trouble-free ownership by JD Power
  • 86/100 reliability rating

Porsche Macan reliability scores

Meanwhile, Porsche’s luxury compact SUV, the
Macan
, did not fare well:
  • RepairPal rates the Macan a less-than-impressive 1.5/5 for reliability—last in its class

Average Porsche repair costs

A Porsche CPO can save you a pretty penny when it comes to repairs to your German roadster.
According to RepairPal, the average annual repair cost for a Porsche is $1,192, which far exceeds the average cost for most cars on the road. Your CPO Porsche’s Limited Warranty won’t cover everything, but it could cover a sizable amount of any necessary repairs.
As an example, Porsche’s are notorious for transmission problems. If your transmission needs repairing or replacing, it could cost you up to $3,500.
Suspension issues are also known to hamper a Porsche. Those repairs aren’t cheap either, costing an average of between $2,100 to $2,300 to repair.
If your Porsche’s brakes wear down and need replacing? That could cost you anywhere from $1,800 to $3,500, depending on the model. In short—thank heavens for your Porsche CPO Limited Warranty!

Our take: is a Porsche CPO warranty worth it?

In short—yes. A Porsche can be unreliable, and you can’t predict the future—even of a certified pre-owned Porsche 911! If you want to protect yourself from the risk of buying a used luxury roadster, a certified pre-owned vehicle with its attendant warranty is a good idea.
Owning a Porsche can be a lot of fun, but the costs of repairs can add up, if you’re unlucky enough to drive a vehicle beset with problems. A certified pre-owned Porsche can lower some risks, while not plunking down as much cash as would be necessary to drive off the lot in a spanking new German roadster (much as you’d like to).
How about that extra year of coverage? It all depends on you, and how much risk you’re prepared to assume for a certified pre-owned Porsche. Take a look at the model’s reliability ratings, recalls, and repair history to determine whether adding that extra year of warranty coverage is worth it for you.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
